This is fantastic news that sandy is retiring Wonder if Russ would have retired if sandy had actually provided him the resources he felt he needed Just listened to his recent interview with mick and others and boy did he hammer his ex players and administrators. As a boston college guy and friend of Jason Kennedy I can see the lack of support that Jason receives at Bc - never had a clue that Russ felt he was not properly supported in the recent decades of his coaching at Penn state Truly disgraceful that he felt under appreciated. And sandy seemed to be a huge problem for him Coach made a comment earlier in the year that he asked his players to watch the Michael Jordon Last Chance series, to get a better feel for what champions were made of. He said that none of them watched it which told him a lot about his team. I remember thinking at the time it was a harsh comment and might be a sign that retirement was around the corner. He pulls no punches, that is for sure. |

The great NYT piece on the team ~2010 had something similar to the Jordan thing...IIRC Wilson did not know, until the reporter told her, that Coach had a masters in sports statistics or whatever. Suddenly a lightbulb went off. THAT's why he says the things he says the way he says them... Lol. I also remember him commenting 4-5 years ago that some of the players were too busy with stuff like tanning appointments to come and hang with him. Unlike Dom.
I think his references to this kind of thing aren't an indictment of the players but of their age, their ability to see beyond the horizon at this point in their development, to be curious.

I can't believe that pete1919's original post sparked such little discussion about Rose, the administration, and the players. Wow. |

I can't believe that pete1919's original post sparked such little discussion about Rose, the administration, and the players. Wow. I wasn't trying to post the interview, just a link. But it is easy to find. I just watched the interview which was the first 33 minutes of the 57 minute YouTube file. It is obvious that RR has a bitter taste in his mouth about the lack of support given to his program from the University. Not being an insider, I don't know what "lack of support" means to a head coach. Seems like PSU's attitude needs an adjustment if success is expected. Hope Coach Katie has her eyes wide open. Anxious to see if a "Celebration" of a distinguished 43 year career is held. Loved the comparison to Coach K at Duke. |

A celebration is scheduled for May 2022. If it's anything like the previous one, held in 2019 at Sandy Barbour's home, it will be first-rate.
