TLDR: 45% result of jesss back row attacks K. 7.5% result in E. If I were going to Vegas….would place a bet that she will not lose a point on her next BRA. Says a lot about Izzy’s comfort level there.

Wow! Jess is #1? That's huge. I would have thought someone like Olivia Babcock would be #1. She's been on a tear from the back row.

Today was one of the most wide-ranging and enjoyable Tuesday press conferences I remember during my time on the Penn State volleyball beat, which has now somehow reached year 10. I started covering the team in 2015 for the student news site Onward State as a junior at Penn State. This afternoon, a large group of student media and I got Jess Mruzik and Cam Hannah on the record in an informal setting in KSC’s office for 20 minutes, then we spoke to assistant coach Megan Hodge Easy for more than 15 minutes. There were a ton of gems of information from all three that I’m really excited for you all to read, including a neat story from Jess about the most ridiculous set she’s seen from Izzy Starck during a practice.

Those who haven’t yet had a chance to watch “The Streak,” the documentary about Penn State volleyball’s 2007-10 championship run and 109-match winning streak, can do so tonight (Tuesday) at 9:30 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network. It will also air Oct. 23 at 1:30 p.m., Oct. 24 at 8 p.m., and Oct. 26 at 1:30 a.m. on BTN.

I just hope that Cam can work her way out of the funk she's in. PSU needs her if they are to go far. Still don't think that Cam is in a funk. I remain of the belief that opposing defenses are focusing on limiting her. More production from the right (including from Jess in the back row) or even setter dumps will help. I guess it depends on whether the high hitting averages earlier in the season were an outlier or not. I guess we'll see. I'm hoping that they weren't (obviously).
Edit: After thinking about it a bit, I realized that you wouldn't necessarily consider the prior high averages an outlier; just that the defenses have gotten used to her and are defending her better.

Wow! Jess is #1? That's huge. I would have thought someone like Olivia Babcock would be #1. She's been on a tear from the back row. Agree completely. Total surprise to me.
I have a question regarding Jess' back row attacks. What percentage (I realize this will probably be a guess) of her attacks are back row? Never mind. I saw on the chart that her back row attacks comprise 15.4% of her attacks. Also, my impression is that Izzy doesn't go to the back row attack very often in oos situations. Is that correct, or am I all wet?
It seems that Jess is the only effective back row attacker. Anjelina' s attacks are only so-so. So our back row attacks only happen when Jess is in the back row. How often has Cam attacked from the back row?
I also noticed on the chart that about 7 players had similar or less percentages of back row attacks than Jess did (I considered players with 17% or less as thats pretty close to Jess). Most of the back row attack percentages were in the twentys.

Cam does play back row when she serves, but Jess is 6 rotations. I have been enjoying PSU volleyball for a while now (like back when i still had hair) and I can't think of a better hitting PSU OH. The variety of her shots, ability to see where the defenders are, to better the ball so consistently, a true force. Jess needs to improve her passing. If she can lift that, I think we may see her on the senior National Team.

I would need Seeyajohn to comment on the rotation personnel when Cam is hitting on the left, but by my rudimentary observation, Cam is asked to take the out of system swings against well formed blocks when our setter is front row a relatively high percentage of her attacks. While Cam has had success tooling the block, or even scoring off "high hands" that is not always so easy when the Libero or DS is setting and when there are no other realistic attack options. When the opposition middles have to worry about other attackers (like Izzy or Jess from back right), then Cam continues to do well. I do recall that Cam did some work at Opposite in the past, and has had pretty good success when she swings on the right. But I suppose it is more important to have her as the OH2 than our other choices at that spot.

Good point. I was forgetting that Cam is usually in the front row with Izzy which means there’s not as many attackers that the other team needs to deal with. So consequently, the Jess back row attack is really important in these rotations.
