Not to pile on the young announcers, but TALK LESS! MUCH MUCH LESS!! This is especially true because you don't have enough knowledge of the game. This is an annual complaint of mine about PSU home broadcasters. Assuming that these are students in media, one would think that their instructors could do a better job! I don't think that's piling on. They are students, yes, but there should be some minimum level of competency before they are let out on the road, so to speak. I'd give the play by play announcer a passing grade -- maybe C+ or B- -- but I'm sorry, the color commentator added absolutely nothing positive to the broadcast. I'd contrast their performance with the team that broadcast the Duke match. Granted, those two are professionals -- and the color commentator also over-talked at times -- but they both had cogent and informative things to add to the discussion. The color commentator actually played the game as a libero for Syracuse. It showed. Think of it this way. Would the Penn State Jazz Ensemble (if there is one) allow someone to join and perform at a concert (even a free concert) if they had never played an instrument, but they were in an "Introduction to Jazz" class and they wanted to be involved in the music business? They wouldn't have a clue about what they were doing, and the audience (US!!!!) would be forced to listen to them.

I'll just say that the student announcers for wrestling, not just at PSU but across the Big 10, are even worse and much less informed about the sport they are supposedly covering.

It's interesting, how a school has very high standards in some areas but not in others. A blind spot; and everybody has a blind spot somewhere.

My brother, who is a big wrestling fan, still chortles about some student announcers in a NEB match when one of them somehting like, "He scores by putting a fist to the back." They had absolutely no clue about wrestling.
Edit: I forgot to mention; he's a BIG PSU wrestling fan, as well as a volleyball and football fan.

I agree, the entire media production could be better and less distracting. However, on the plus side, at least it was available to watch live. On the other board (VT), some of the comments indicated that their recent games were not.

On the topic of bad commentating... Penn State Field Hockey upset #15 Princeton today and is now 3-3. The commentator exclaimed, "Penn State is back at .300!".

I think that the young woman is the same one that did a lot of the matches last year. Maybe the guy is the same as last year also. I think that they have two problems (at least two ).:
1) They think they know more than they do. 2) They fall into the same trap that many much more experienced announcers do; They end up burying you in so much background detail that it takes away form the acdtual game.
I've only thought about their teachers from the viewpoint of education re: volleyball. But you're right. Does anybody give them a clue about what a good play-by-play or what a good color analyst is?
One could say that they need to get the experiece. Maybe so. But what good is the experience without any idea of how they should do their job?
Different woman. Last year’s had played iirc. And I think they had grabbed her the year before as well when they were shorthanded. She was endearing but didn’t quite have the gift of gab….but did know WVB.

Would tell their profs to train them to 1 watch the play 2 watch the ref complete the call. 3 meet with ref before and understand completely the call signals. 4 rely on refs not line judges. 5 before you talk about who won the play confirm by seeing who is preparing for the next serve. 6 if you hear the arena announcer say POINT PENN STATE — or fail to, take note.
And to the producer in the control booth— .75 extra seconds camera capturing the upref and his call signal so that we at home don’t have to rely on what we hear.

They would not let me quit because seemingly no one else on campus owned a baritone saxophone. While judging my own skills is a questionable activity, there were some people who accused me of "never playing before. On the other hand, the list of people who were "forced" to listen to me was fairly short and apparently composed of persons who's aural acuity was less than optimal.

That was legendary. The referee raised a closed fist to indicate stalling. The student announcer said it was a penalty for "illegal fist to the back."
