Massey Ratings gave PSU a 46% chance of winning tonight, and predicted Oregon would win in 5 sets. This surprises me. I'm curious what chances Pable gave PSU of winning.
Thing is, Massey is strictly looking at stats and doesn't take the emotional/phyical state of the teams into consideration. Neither Louisville, Purdue or Oregon have played their best volleyball against PSU. DuBeer for Louisville has snapped out of the offensive funk she was in for must of the beginning of the season. Purdue played one of their poorest games of the season. Not sure why that is. Part of it is how good PSU can play, but I sure don't think that is all of it.

I think the Pitt loss skewed the Massey analysis. Plus, the Kentucky reverse sweep match probably dings PSU for Massey. Plus, the dropped sets to lesser teams (and the losses by teams like Tennessee and Kentucky after they played Penn State) also probably downgraded Penn State for the Massey algorithm.

Some thoughts about the game.
Jess didn't have a good night receiving. Was aced and popped up a fair number of serves. I wonder what plan B will be, if their is a plan B, for a tournament game where she isn't receiving very good. Who would come in as a DS for her? Is there anyone?
Both teams got a lot of block touches in the 1st set. There were a lot of blocks for both teams, PSU with 9 and OR with 7.5 It sure seems that the PSU block is steadily getting better.
From what I can see, Izzy is VERY good at putting up a good set on oos passes/poor receptions. Cline from OR wasn't doing nearly as well. From what I can see, Fuerbringer from WISC, another freshman setter isn't nearly as good as Izzy at this.
One of the comments that on the broadcast is how well rounded Izzy is. Besides being a good setter, she blocks quite well, she can dig really well, (she's usually 2nd or 3rd in digs on the team tho not tonight; tonight she only had 2 digs). She's really driven to get better from everything I've heard.
Seems to me that Izzy has been too predictable when doing setter dumps. This has shown up in her negative hitting percentage the last 3 matches. kThe opposing teams know she likes to do those and consequently is ready when there are tight passes. It is very similar to always setting the middle when you have a perfect pass. If a setter does that consistently, the other team will be ready to block it. She needs to not do that (middles and dumps both) some times to throw off the opposing blockers. SHe's no dummy, she'll figure it out.
Nice to see everybody else picking up the slack when Cam had a not so good night. I'd sure like to know the cause of her funk. I'm not a good enough observer to figure it out.
Matt Ulmer mentioned in talking to the commentators, that OR was usually the leader in fan attendance in the Pac 12. In the B1G, they're 5th or 6th. He said that his team needs to learn to play before such a large number of fans and in such a raucous atmosphere.
OR had plane issues coming into Happy Valley. Also, someone also mentioned that the PAC 12 schedule seldom had back to back matches. In prior years, B1G teams have been used to that. In addition, the long flights to the midwest/east coast teams adds to the west coast teams not playing their best.
If only PSU could play this well every match!!! It's a goal.
