I was watching the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying match between Costa Rica and Mexico yesterday. Rocky scored both goals for her country and they beat Mexico 2-1. USA and Costa Rica qualified for the semis in group A and are awaiting the outcome of the group B matches being played today. Rocky is a world class midfielder, I think the Portland Thorns made a huge mistake by trading their #2 pick in the NWSLSoccer draft to NJ Sky Blue, who picked up Rocky with the pick.

OK, I'm finally creating a thread for the PSU Women's Soccer team for 2016.I wasn't sure how they'd do this year since they lost so much quality. How's the soccer team doing? From Sept. 18th, 2016They're doing good, I'd say tied for top team in the B1G along with Minnesota (whom they tied 1-1 on Friday). They are missing 3 defensive players and 1 midfielder (all starters on last years team) to the U-20 Women's World Cup. All those players took a redshirt year. Lots of young players have stepped in this year trying to settle into their positions. Team is still solid, but it'll take a few more games to work out the kinks. We picked up 2 really good international players in August, so when our woso team gels, I think they can be dangerous in the tourney. From Sept. 25th, 2016Women's Soccer team defeated Nebraska today by a score of 2-1. Also, on Friday (9/23/16) PSU defeated Iowa by a score of 2-0. Our record is: 7-2-2 Overall 3-0-1 Conf. 5-1-1 Home 2-1-1 Away

OK, I'm finally creating a thread for the PSU Women's Soccer team for 2016.I wasn't sure how they'd do this year since they lost so much quality. It seems they're getting it together; their record is: 7-2-2 Overall 3-0-1 Conf. 5-1-1 Home 2-1-1 Away Women's Soccer team defeated Nebraska today (9/25/16) by a score of 2-1. Also, on Friday (9/23/16) PSU defeated Iowa by a score of 2-0. @gnu2vball (or anyone of our mods) can you move the posts about the women's soccer team from the Field Hockey thread to this one? Thanks. Apparently, one of the competent mods accommodated your most reasonable of requests. Thanks for keeping us apprised.

Rest of conference schedule:On 10/06 vs Indiana at 7 pm EST On 10/09 vs Maryland at 1 pm EST PSU WoSo tied Indiana 1-1 on Oct. 6, which was a huge let down. The girls looked stagnant, maybe the short turnaround and travel did them in. PSU WoSo defeated Maryland today 3-0. Our overall record is now 9-2-3 and our conference record is 5-0-2 (W-L-T). 1) PSU is now 1st in B1G conference play, which is huge (i.e., home field advantage) for the conference championship tourney. 2) Northwestern is 2nd in the conference with a 5-1-1 record. 3) Michigan is 3rd in the conference with a 5-2-0 record. Next match vs Rutgers on 10/13 at 7 pm EST.

I couldn't watch the match live, so I'm going to watch it now. I'll let you know.
EDIT: PSU tied Rutgers 2-2; each team scored a goal in each half. No goals in O.T. It wasn't a bad result, considering Rutgers was a final four team last season, but PSU did have home field advantage.
PSU is now 5-0-3 in conference play and 9-2-4 overall.
Three more matches remaining until the B1G conference tournament: On 10/16 vs Purdue at 1 pm EST On 10/22 vs Michigan St. at 12 pm EST On 10/26 vs Ohio St. at 6 pm EST
I don't see PSU WoSo going too far in the NCAA tournament this year. Their defense has not been as solid as last year, because many players are missing. Next year when we get back the 4 field players and 1 goalkeeper who are with the USWNT U-20 team, look out. PSU is also getting a very good freshman in 2017 who was on the USWNT U-17 team. I expect the 2017 team to be very strong in defense, midfield, and up top (i.e., scoring).
If coach Dumbach can schedule some tough games early and end the season with a top 5 RPI, we could host up through the final four.

Based on a small sample, my observation is that the mid field has struggled to win and keep possession. The attack is pretty good, and features long balls into open space for diagonal runs. However, without a lot of possession, it is difficult for the outside backs to join the attack-a staple of the National Championship group.
As Millenium says, we are missing 4 of our top field players (the replacement keeper has actually done quite well). Younger folks are getting playing time, so any success this year should hopefully lead to a serious run next year.
