I thought I'd share some inspirational quotes from coach Rose. He certainly had some doozies.

I've heard people say that maybe we'd be better served had we lost. I was kind of wondering what profession they were in. I wouldn't want a lawyer representing me to think like that. I wouldn't want a doctor operating on me to think like that. -Russ Rose

You can't get too high when it's good and you can't get too low when it's not good. -Russ Rose

Its not a right to be an athlete its a privilege to be an athlete, I feel the same about being a coach. It's a privilege to be a coach. How are you going to handle your responsibility. -Russ Rose (source: Art of Coaching Volleyball)

I'm not trying to set the bar high. We're just trying to compete. We want to grind. This is what we do. -Russ Rose

Having good players is certainly a factor, but there are a lot of other characteristics that go into winning a championship. You're not going to win just because you have good players. I don't necessarily think our seven best teams are the teams that won seven national championships. We had some teams that were better that didn't win championships, and we had teams that won national titles that maybe weren't one of our seven best teams but battled hard and found a way to win.

Commitment. That’s being all in and wanting others to subscribe to the mission and recognize the importance of working together, controlling the things that you can control and having fun with the process.
It doesn’t have to be tortuous. It has to be fun. But it’s hard to achieve great things with mediocre effort. Having great players doesn’t guarantee that you’ll have a great team. It means you have great potential. The execution part is the hard part. That’s where people have to get in the gym and they have to work hard and they have to sacrifice and they have to be cognizant of what the other players’ needs are and can they massage their contribution to the team to give us a best chance for success? That’s instead of just digging their heels in the sand.
It’s commitment to whatever the cause is. It’s being all in. It’s not being distracted, not letting the noise bother you, not focusing on anything other than what you’ve identified as being the most important thing.

I have a good libero and a good setter. That's a good place to start. The other things are kind of up in the air, but I'll know more in three days and even more a week from now and more than that when we come back to Nebraska.

It’s what you do when no one’s watching, not what you do when people come in with a camera and set it up and you need to make sure that you have your makeup on and everything is looking good because it’s a TV game. It’s what do you do every day when you don’t feel like getting up and working out and getting your rest and watching your diet and doing the things that you have to do to give yourself a chance to be successful. There’s no guarantee that you’re going to be successful, you just have to control all the variables to give yourself the best chance to be successful. The fact that it’s a team sport — so many variables don’t really rest with just you. The best team players are the ones who don’t care who gets the accolades; they care that the team wins.
