I think Michella is a PSU fan. She frequently gives shout outs and credit when they do good, especially to individual players. Pitt as of late (last 2-3 years) has been a power. They deserve to be where they're at and it's a safe call based on where the program is. It might be a little hasty to vault PSU to the top. The ladies are doing great, but let them get some more reps with each other, and build on their success to become unstoppable. Oh, I don't think PSU should be #1 (at least yet) and as mentioned, Pitt may very well be the best/most complete team right now... I'm just making fun of Michella's logic. I like that we're probably going to Pitt as slight underdogs (provided disaster doesn't strike this weekend). Pitt will have a lot more to prove than us. We're still in resurrection mode.

I miscounted yesterday. Thought I saw 8. interesting that in past years we routinely had 7 ranked teams w a conference size of 14.

Emily Ehman made a good point in a recent video saying that voters need to vote according to how teams are that week, and not where they think they'll be at the end.

Emily Ehman made a good point in a recent video saying that voters need to vote according to how teams are that week, and not where they think they'll be at the end. Which is why Pitt shouldn't be 1st right now. They haven't proved it yet. Maybe they are the best, but they haven't played anybody to show that. And again, this should be whose the best team NOW, not at the end of the season, or who was best last season.
OTOH, how do you rank teams in the 1st - 3rd weeks of the season? Volleyballmag doesn't even do their poll until the beginning of conference play. There is so little data to go on at this point that it's really a waste of time. Just gives fans something to argue over.
What is sorta funny is the RPI part of things. Some people on the other forum were talking about how the ACC and SEC (I think) are playing games with the schedule to up the RPI of their teams. The RPI Futures thread shows Pitt with the top RPI when they haven't played anybody any good so far. What a joke. Then again, as most fans know, the RPI is a joke from start to finish. It just isn't a very good indicator of the strength of a team.
Edit: A big part of the problem with the polls is: 1) The AVCA poll starts too early. When you have polls at the very beginning of the year you HAVE to, to a certain degree, go by last year, and if the team is a lot better/worse than last year a team will too high/low. Which create problems as there is a lot of inertia in the polls and it's hard, to move to where the team SHOULD be. 2) Especially in the AVCA poll, you wonder if the people sending in votes have even LOOKED at the results from the prior week, as the votes are so weird. Part of that is understandable as coaches are focused on their own team and not the results of 24/24 other teams.
3) Voters, a lot of times, go by reputation of the teams. One team that has been the recipient of that a lot is Texas. They have a big reputation and consequently get a lot of votes they shouldn't get, as their conference (BIG 12) is so weak. SEC is a little better but still. Last few years Texas HAS been as good as their rep, but there have been many years previously where Texas had an easy road to the semi-finals that wasn't warranted. Too be fair, (I know, who wants that), Texas, (and a lot of teams this year), have really upped the quality of teams being played in the pre-conf schedule so you do get a better idea as to how good they are. IMHO, I think that this year has had maybe the most highly ranked teams playing each other in the pre-conf schedules.
<end of rant>

<end of rant> I agree whole heartily. Frankly I think rankings should be done by computer, and not until 5 matches into the season. Tennis line calls are done now that way, and eventually balls and strikes will be as well in the majors leagues. No player arguments...ever. I think today's system is like voting for the prom king and queen.

AVCA poll is for entertainment purposes. NCAA selection committee doesn't use it for seeding. Don't sweat the small stuff.
