I am sort of naive about volleyball so this season has been a puzzle for me. Our coaching staff is one of the best ever in the sport and we had a national championship just last year. I expected us to really struggle at the beginning of the season and gradually improved but it seems like just the opposite has occurred. Could someone please explained to me what is going on?

The league is good to very good top to bottom. That was not the case in most recent years. 2. It was clearly stated at the beginning of the year and the middle it was going to be a Rollercoaster ride. -- put your hands up and enjoy the ride -- or hold on the railing with white knuckles. Your choice! 3. The brackets will be filled in at 8:30 tonight and the records of EVERY team will start the same. Goal is to win the next one in front. Survive and advance. 4. The team who rows in the same rythym will have the great chance to move one.

I believe that PSU has NOT improved since the beginning of the year; they've remained stagnate, maybe even regressed slightly. Other teams started out slow and have markedly improved over the course of the regular season. I think the reason for this is because coach has been tinkering with the lineup all year trying to find players that complement each other and play well as a unit, which ultimately has not allowed the team to gel and find a rhythm and trust. PSU is NOT a bad team, but they are not at the level of the top 6-7 teams.

Right?

Right? Yes. That's the great thing about the tourney and brackets. You only need a favorable draw and anything is possible. Also, teams play tighter (i.e., more nervous in once-and-done situations) in the post-season and I think PSU has an advantage over every else in this category. They've been there before and their expectations now are lower, so they'll have less pressure to win.

If Nebraska made more than 5 mistakes last night I did not see them. They were hot and we were not. Losing can be a motivation for those who are ambitious and I believe that ambition is baked into every player who wears the PSU uniform.

Losing can be a motivation for those who are ambitious and I believe that ambition is baked into every player who wears the PSU uniform. The PSU players certainly have the drive to win and that's fed by the greatness of the coach and his program. I mentioned in my Nebraska Match Preview Analysis: "It seems to me that this match will come down to the individual brilliance of one or more players. Who will bring it? This match could also be dictated by which team will make less mistakes and errors."
It's my opinion that the Nebraska players played with more intensity and they made fewer errors. PSU could've kept it close in the first two sets, but hitting errors early on cost them, and they fell too far behind to rally at the end of sets 1 & 2. With a good team like Nebraska you have to keep it close because they struggled all year to close out sets, which would've worked in our favor. Unfortunately, we gave them too big a lead in sets 1 & 2. However, we played much better in set 3 and that gives me hope that this team can compete and doesn't give up. I liked that a lot, that's the one big positive I took away from the loss.

If they let their opponent create too much separation, they aren't able to close the gap.

If they let their opponent create too much separation, they aren't able to close the gap. If there's a surprise about this season, it's probably that. Courtney, Washington, Frantti and Whitney in the front row, and the team couldn't terminate consistently. Some of that was setting, some was passing, but some of it was the front line itself never quite clicked. However, I do think it's worth giving some credit to the opposition. That Nebraska team is the best John Cook has had since they joined the B1G and maybe his best in a long time. Minnesota has slumped a little but they have the potential to run the table IMHO. And Wisconsin is playing extremely well right now. The B1G has three teams that could win a championship. PSU just doesn't happen to be one of them this year.
