As I understand it, OSU's The Platform gives student athletes some instruction on making money in their sports career after college. Without a sustainable professional indoor volleyball league in the U.S., I don't see how this provides any benefit for volleyball players. What am I missing?

Having known an Olympic Fencer and Olympic Pentathlete who made steady money through endorsements and speaking after they retired from active competition, I can attest that there is money to be made outside of the big, professional league sports. I don't know that Opendorse is the right platform or not, but with states like California and many others making it legal for NCAA athletes to profit from the use of their name and likeness, schools like Penn State need to explore options, and have a thoughtful response if they choose not to adopt something like Opendorse. Simply saying "We support amateurism and this isn't in the spirit of amateurism" (not that this would be your, or Penn State's response) won't cut it, IMHO. |
