Wanted to get started early with this one. Seems likely to be the Big10 match of the season. I have some info I'd like to share with everyone. First, I have updated the sideout stat charts for both teams. Second, I updated the relevant stat comparison chart between the two. I've also included the conference-only stats in the later chart per Nyline's recommendation. If you notice any errors, please let me know. Thank you. Click on the thumbnail icon below to open a larger graphic.I recently watched the MN vs NE match from Oct. 23 (thank you Psumaui). MN won that match in Nebraska 3 sets to 1. Some interesting comments which former Nebraska coach Terry Pettit made during that match: 1) MN coach Hugh McCutcheon, who won a gold and silver medal with the men's and women's National teams, is probably as good tactically as any coach in the country, in terms of coming up with a game plan. 2) Seliger-Swenson (MN's setter) pushes very fast sets to Santana who tips half the time, which causes the block to begin reaching up, which makes it less effective. 3) You benefit from a loss, because the players are humbled and become teachable afterwards.Other observations from commentators in that match: After hitting over .300 in the first 2 sets, Santana cooled off considerable in sets 3 & 4 hitting .000 Coach Haley from USC made reference to the issue of his best player, Samantha Bricio, taking a large amount of swings each match. Earlier in the season he said that she wouldn’t last to the end of the season if she continues like that. It’s a lot like pitching, in baseball pitchers have a max pitch count, after which they begin to be less effective. My takeaway is that Santana is in the front row for only 3 rotations and Penn State needs to take advantage when she’s in the back.

That's funny. Always happy to contribute.
I read an article in the Collegian about Bryanna which read: Coach Russ Rose said he's seen a mixed bag of results from Weiskircher this season, but overall, he said he's pleased with the setter who has paced the Lions to the nation's top ranking.
“The bottom line is, one team has been ranked No. 1 in the country the longest of any other team this season, and she's the setter on that team,” Rose said. “She's had some real challenges, but I think she has good skills, and she's pretty tough — she's got to get tougher — but I think she's handled a lot of her requirements well.”

Even though she noticed the Lions looked good at times, they struggled. Looking back, the team could have had more control of the ball, communicated better and exulted more energy, the captain said.Rose said he does not think the Lions played very hard, and he noticed that his advice does not have much impact on the players at this point in the season. The coach said that the Lions’ No. 1 ranking is due to people voting on past performances rather than the current efforts of the team. I keep hearing this word "communication" coming up for months now. The Best player feels it. The Best Coach senses it. The Best fans see it.
I wonder where it all goes from here.

RR is really disappointed with the lack of consistent play.

I wonder if the team is suffering from PCL (post championship lull)? It seems after any team in any sport wins a championship, the next year they go through a dip. How much more so after being 2-time NC. Perhaps they begin to work less, with the mentality that it'll come naturally. Or maybe other teams are playing them the toughest of any opponent with a nothing-to-lose mentality. One thing is for sure, they have a bulls eye on their backs.

We've posted a Q&A with Club Coach on the Penn State - Minnesota match. Here's the link: Penn State vs. Minnesota: Q&A with Club CoachAnd here's an excerpt: DigNittany: After Penn State’s 3-2 win over Minnesota on September 26th, Coach Rose said he thought that Daly Santana and Megan Courtney were “especially key for their teams, with their confidence and their smart shots.” Santana certainly has been a force for Minnesota this season, but some of her conference-only statistics aren’t eye-popping: her 4.53 kills/set leads the B1G, but her .237 attack % won’t turn many heads; she’s averaging a more-than respectable 3.00 digs/set in conference matches, and is 7th in the B1G with .29 service aces/set, but has managed only 0.34 blocks/set. What makes Daly Santana so effective, and what can Penn State do to try to minimize her impact on the match? Club Coach: Santana is a really dynamic player, and I think emotionally she is the engine that makes them go. She takes big swings, and is a great point scorer, but with those big swings come errors — thus the big kills per game but the just pretty average attack percentage. I think “how” she plays is what makes her so special, not just the numbers. Obviously block set up is really important against a player like Santana, but that is really hard to do given how well they pass, the fast tempo they run, and their exceptional freshman setter, Samantha Seliger-Swenson. Keeping her off balance with the serve, and matching her competitiveness, will be keys for PSU.

I wouldn't be surprised by a Minnesota sweep. No weakness on that team. They pass great, they serve tough, they're good in transition, their offense is super fast and produces lots of single block opportunities, and like PSU they have great hitting middles so you really can't just focus on Santana.
At the same time, PSU has had the kind of schedule the last couple weeks that the coaches could probably devote some time to preparing for Minnesota. So maybe Rose and Rockwell can find some cracks in the armor, we'll find out...
If PSU's problem is only intensity and focus, they may be OK because they'll be focused for a match of this quality.
I'm actually worried more about the matchups. That Minnesota team is one of the deepest and most talented Big Ten teams I've seen in a long time. They actually have the horses to line up against PSU pretty well. Every single point is going to be a battle with them and if PSU gets ahead and relaxes for a second, they'll lose it.

Minn. has been playing at a high level consistently which PSU has not. Even if PSU plays up to the level of the opponent they don't seem to sustain it for the entire match. Minn. has the advantage at setter and libero. I am a devoted fan of our team but I think Minn. is better this season.

Is that advantage that you believe significant enough to create a problem for this match? Santana = Courtney (Megan hasn't been sharp lately but she always rises up to big matches. Frantti > Wilhite/Goehner in every skill Washington > Hannah Tapp Whitney > Paige Tapp Lee slight > Lohman Rose > McCutcheon Away > Home Recent play? < Minn

As always, Cross5 makes astute observations, all of which may be valid. As I noted, Minn. is playing consistently at a high level, recently defeated Nebraska. Compare how Minn. played at Northwestern vs how PSU played there. And anyone who thought PSU played well at Rutgers might consider that Indiana just swept Rutgers in 3 sets.
I believe PSU could defeat Minn. if they play at a high level for 90%+ of the match. Have they done so recently against a very good team? Does their play over the last several weeks suggest that they will?

This team’s inconsistency seems to be based on the challenge. We play well against the teams we fear (Stanford, Ohio St, e.g.), Minn (first 2 sets), Nebraska (first two sets), but once we get a lead, or when playing teams we expect to beat, we let up and hand control to the opponent. Two totally different teams out there, at times.
Reviewing the last Minn game, it is clear that Minn served to force the only set available to the left side where they had a consistently strong block. Only Whitney was able to pound through or over it. Marvelous Megan had some luck poking tips into holes that only she could see. Minn serves were consistently aimed to fall weakly into the mid left court, forcing our receivers to dive to make a (feeble or errant) pass.
Our serving pressure was very weak throughout the game. Way too many serves that led to 3 point passes. We must have serve pressure at the level of the Ohio State games.
Penn State’s present team at times is much better than the team that beat Minn on Sept 27. We need strong leadership to get the mentality up to EVERY POINT EVERY GAME. Won’t get far in NCAAs with the present “play only hard enough to win” attitude. I wish the team had not been elevated to No. 1.

Does their play over the last several weeks suggest that they will? They've done pretty well 2 games against OSU, Purdue and Michgan St. in the recent games. I do agree Minny is better than all of them, but if PSU can play with focus, they'll be fine. They beat Minny at home without playing well, so I'll give them the benefit of doing it again, even though it's at Minny this time.
